Love Is The Ultimate Painkiller

via gizmodo.com Don't bother with morphine the next time you are pain. All you need is a healthy dose of love to make yourself feel better in an instant. A group of 17 women lined up at UCLA to have their brain scanned while they received brief, stinging shocks. They endured this form of medical torture so they could prove to the world that love conquers all, including pain. While being shocked, these women were shown photographs. Sometimes they saw their loved ones. Sometimes they gazed upon a stranger. Other times they were shown a random object. Not surprisingly, the photos of a lover stimulated a part of the brain that is linked to feelings of safety and protection. Now bursting with those gushy feelings of love, the ladies were numb to the pain. [Wired]

Runway Closed by Swarm of Turtles

via gizmodo.com cloud? Meteor shower? No—the NYT reports JFK's Runway 4 was closed for over an hour today because a hundred turtles crawled all over it. That's a lot of turtles, right? I think I'd consider any group of more than, like, four turtles to be a lot of turtles. But a hundred! And not just turtles—diamondback terrapins. What a regal reptile. It must have been a majestic sight. Unless your plane was delayed, in which case you were probably somewhere between miffed and terrified. But can you blame the poor shelled things? No! "They look for sandy spots to lay their eggs," explained an NY Port Authority spokesman, "and there is an ideal location on the other side of Runway 4L. They come out of the water and cross the runway to lay their eggs in the sand." They just wanted to lay their eggs. Haven't you ever run through a turtle pond on the way to deliver a human baby? It's just like that. This happened in 2009—and that time it was...

How the American School System Can Train Kids for High-Tech Jobs - Education - GOOD

via good.is In May of 2010, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported an estimated 2.6 million jobs were unfilled. In the heart of the worst American recession in decades, with unemployment rates hovering at nine percent, there were over two million unfilled jobs. Why the contradiction? Many of these unfilled positions were in industries such as healthcare, aerospace, advanced precision manufacturing, scientific laboratory occupations, and computer-related design jobs which require knowledge of the STEM fields: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Barbecued Buffalo Wings Recipe | Simply Recipes

via simplyrecipes.com Planning a gathering for a Fourth of July BBQ? Try these spicy hot wings from Hank. Watch out though, they're good; if you're not careful you might eat the whole batch! ~Elise Many years ago, when I was a cross country runner in college on Long Island, our team had a Tuesday tradition: After an especially hard workout, we would go to a place called Big Barry's in Lake Grove and eat as many buffalo wings as we possibly could. Why Tuesday? That was night when each wing cost only 13 cents. Now I've eaten thousands of Buffalo wings before and since, but none were like Big Barry's. I swear they had to be either roasted or grilled, because Barry's wings were crisp and charred and very much not like those nasty, pallid fried things you get in most of the country. Amazing what a slight difference in cooking method can do for a humble dish. I loved these wings. Loved them. So much so that one day, after an unusually tough workout (and not a few...

Facebook, Meet Your Newest Social Network Competitor: Google+ | Skatter Tech

via skattertech.com After long speculation, Google is officially introducing the company’s Facebook rival today, named Google+. It has a number of unique features to the service. Plus, there is no sign up required for anyone with an active Google account. But is this really the Facebook killer we have been waiting for? Google+ has five different points of emphasis. The first is Circles, which lets you drag and drop friends into specific groups. Similar to Facebook friend lists, yes, but a lot of the sharing revolves around which groups the user decides to share certain bits of information to. Building upon Circles is Hangouts, which is really just Google’s fancy term for group video chat. In the stream, users can see who is “hanging out” and decide to join a hangout and participate in a large video conference. Hangouts may consist of random friends or specific Circles of friends. Sparks is the third point of emphasis, and it stems more from Google search than it does from the soci...
